US Foreign Aid 1945-1986
After World War II, leaders in the United States wanted to establish foreign markets for their goods. Because Eastern Europe was essentially off-limits due to the Soviet presence in the region, the United States spent its money and energy developing markets in promising regions such as East Asia and Latin America. In this graph, note the difference in foreign aid spending for Eastern Europe compared to Western Europe and the Far East.
