Racist wartime propaganda helped shape early responses to the atomic bombing of Japan. In the Atlanta Constitution's August 8, 1945, cartoon, "Land of the Rising Sons," bodies fly whimsically through the air above Japan. The St. Louis Star-Times cartoonist pictured a grotesque stereotyped "Jap" snarling back as death bearing an atomic bomb looms above him.
